Chapter 04

Hu Xiao's complexion was not looking very good. From the moment that Luo Ding and he received the audition script the same role, he had been sizing up this guy who made him felt an inexplicable kind of strangeness on the guy.

He really didn't like this guy who was always pretending to be aloof.

A few years ago, it was him who snatched his chance to make a debut with Su Shengbai, winning with his face, but wasn't he still remains unpopular until now? But the company actually arranged the same broker for him (LD) and himself! Hu Xiao was considered to be a small and powerful artist. Whether it was singing or acting, he has the foundation, and his present popularity and status have been accumulated with a little bit of an effort. But for Luo Ding, only by depending on his natural appearance, his path was so much easier to walk than him. Although the gap between the two men's current status had gradually widened, when he thought about his painstaking effort to hone his acting and singing skills, he couldn't say with conviction that Luo Ding couldn't earn the same appearance rate or roles even as he was just quietly sitting in the corner.

His hostility towards Luo Ding was based on this reason. Although Hu Xiao was proud, he did not vent his hatred to everyone. At Yaxing Entertainment, Luo Ding always received the honour of being nitpicked by him. When he looked at Luo Ding who pretended to be calm but was scolded by him until his face paled but still dared not contradict his face, Hu Xiao was still unable to vent his annoyance completely.

This time, the company arranged for Luo Ding to audition with him, which already made him felt a bit uncomfortable. Now that Luo Ding had actually chosen the same role as him, wasn't this a provocation?

He held the paper and his gnashed his teeth angrily until they itched, but Luo Ding didn't care at all. He kept reciting his lines in the outer room. He seemed to be more serious than himself, Hu Xiao absentmindedly walked away for a while. He didn't know where the dissatisfaction came from but it was bubbling up in his heart. He was determined to show the boy his strength.

(TN: ye dude, be a man and fight fair and square. at least we still have respect towards the losing party, not contempt)

The moment he pushed the door into the audition room, he keenly noticed that Luo Ding's temperament became a little different, but all the people in the room were veteran directors in the circle. In front of many eyes, Hu Xiao didn't dare to look around. He could only anxiously recalled back those lines from the script.

Hu Xiao has good eyesight. He noticed that the two judges on the jury's side to look in their own direction. Although he didn't understand the intention of the other party, he still slightly leaned to show the other side the most perfect angle.

"He's so alike! He truly resembles the character!"

"He precisely has the hint of him..."

He stood close to the judge's seat, vaguely heard similar discussions coming from there, and his heart suddenly tensed up.

When it was his turn, Hu Xiao swallowed his saliva, suppressed the tension in his heart, and stood tremblingly in front of the jury.

Zheng Kezhen, with a short white beard, took his eyes back from the door and his eyesight fell on him lightly, flipped over his resume, and was surprised: "how many plays have you filmed? 《Rainbow Bridge》..... That show had a good rating at the beginning. What role are you going to try?"

Due to this being his first time to meet such a heavy-weight director face-to-face, Hu Xiao's voice was dry: “Yes... Fu Zhu. ”

Fu Zhu.

In 《Tang Zhuan》, a tragic character who plays a very important role, although his appearance rate was not very high, he has constant appearance throughout the drama, as well as having a rivalry with the male and female protagonists. More importantly, although the character was tragic, the setting was very interesting.

When Fu Zhu first appeared, the Xuanwu Gate Incident had already occurred.  As a disciple of Prince Li Jiancheng, he had to leave his hometown to avoid Li Shimin's purge. Owing a lot of favours from Li Jiancheng, he had an absolute loyalty towards his Lord. After surviving, he naturally made up his mind to avenge Li Jiancheng. He laboriously worked hard to learn a skill. When he came out again, he had become a well-known bachelor among the people. Li Shimin heard the news of his outstanding talent and recruited him to become an official.

(TN: Xuanwu Gate Incident: a palace coup for the throne in Tang dynasty by Prince Li Shimin, ambushing and killing the Crown Prince and his older brother, Prince Li Jiancheng, and his younger brother, Prince Li Yuanji. Later, Li Shimin rose to the throne as Emperor Taizong.)

Fu Zhu thought that he had the chance to kill Li Shimin, and he agreed after pretending to be half-willing and half-unwilling to win Li Shimin's trust. During his first try on killing Li Shimin, he overheard Li Shimin and his close confidants talking about flourishing civilian education. He thought that there would be countless poor people in the world who could get a better life by reading thus he quietly put away his knife. On his second try to kill Li Shimin, he overheard Li Shimin and his henchmen denouncing corrupt officials from on top of the roof. He wanted to personally go on an inspection tour in incognito and plain clothes to observe the people's livelihood in the world. Thinking of the possibility of eliminating all the vermins in the land under Heaven by the purging of the most authoritarian emperor in the world, he silently put away his knife again. On the third try, he made up his mind to kill Li Shimin, but when he met him in private, he heard Li Shimin said goodbye to him, saying that he would personally lead the battle for Gaoli (Korea in Goryeo dynasty). Seeing that the other side was fully aware of the dangers on the battlefield but insisted on doing so to increase the army's morale by risking his own safety. For the last time, Fu Zhu ultimately put away his dagger. Before Li Shimin's personal expedition, he wrote down three brocade bags for him and reluctantly said goodbye to him.

After Li Shimin left, he put down the incense table, made 999 rings for Li Jiancheng, and then ended his short life with the dagger that had not been able to achieve its purpose.

Li Shimin was saved from danger for three times because of his three brocade bags. Originally, he wanted to reward Fu Zhu after his teacher returned to the dynasty. What he didn't expect was that he would receive the news that he had died first. After the origin of Fu Zhu was dug out, Li Shimin suffered a terrible psychological blow, thus disappeared behind the scene for many years.

The ability to change this small character setting was to highlight the glorious achievements of the emperor from another perspective, who also had a relationship with Empress Zhangsun in the adaptation. In the adaptation, he was a playmate with Empress Zhangsun when he was young and had always admired the counterpart in his heart. It's a pity that as a common advisor, he was destined to have no future with such a  great and influential woman. Empress Zhangsun married Li Shimin, and he became a bereaved dog after Li Jiancheng's death. When he returned to Chang'an, he was kind to Empress Zhangsun, but he never revealed his identity. Instead, he silently went through several dangerous situations behind her to deal with Empress Zhangsun's plot against Imperial Concubine Wei.

Such a big spare tire which connects the harem plot and the plot of the previous dynasty, was born to earn ample tears from the audience. What's more, in the original work, there was also a stroke of characters dedicated to him: "Refined, handsome and elegant, like an immortal". Such a role, if played well enough, one could possibly benefit from becoming a topic that could never be separated from the hero and heroine. But to perform well is not a simple thing. Almost half of these tide of people who came for the auditions were for this role, but there was yet none in front of him who was in line with the director's wishes.

(TN: “清俊飘逸,不似人间”: Qingjun - the just, honest and talented/handsome man)

Hu Xiao took a deep breath, took a step back, and began to perform according to Fu Zhu's part in the audition script.

In the audition request, after Fu Zhu became famous for his talent, Li Shimin sent someone to invite him to become an official in Chang'an and he had to act out the scene was of his refusal. The play was not difficult for Hu Xiao. The directors who have cooperated with him praised his profound lines. And people who have had acting experience know that the existence of lines that can express emotions with cadence is a killing weapon, compared with conveying the act only by relying on the subtle differences of eyes and facial features. Heaven sure was helping him.

Hu Xiao, with a cold face, waved his right arm proudly: "Scram!"

Zheng Kezhen frowned slightly. When he heard the light and soft bite at the end of the other side's lines, he was a little astonished and began to size up Hu Xiao. He could bring that line such a complex mix of hatred and expectation, there was no need to speak about his acting skills but the lines were quite accurate.

He settled down his emotions and refocused.

As if Hu Xiao heard what the other party said, his figure stiffened, slowly turned to the person and concealed the mysterious emotions in his eyes: "Your Majesty really said that?"

A moment later, pulled up a slight, untraceable sneer from the corner of his mouth: "So concerned about the people..... Great, then I'll go with you this time."

He said, but his eyes became gloomy, which was quite different from the expectation in the words, as if he was imagining how to cut Li Shimin into pieces. In just three sentences, the complex and tangled feelings of the character and his hatred towards Li Shimin were vividly displayed.

Zheng Kezhen nodded, with appreciation in his eyes: "You're not bad, you're Hu Xiao, right? Stay here. Go have a rest over there first. When the audition is finished, you'll recite lines for me alone. " He had been busying about for the whole day. Not many of them could make his eyes brightened up like Hu Xiao did. Although he was strict, he was not dead brained. If he could not find an actor, he would not be able to start the shooting as it was impossible for the whole cast to just wait for him for the sake of the role to be determined. When necessary, the director has to take a step back from his choice, even if he is unwilling to do it.

"Next. Luo Ding! " He turned a page and didn't look at Hu Xiao's excited expression. His eyes fell on the actor's resume and nodded slightly. The actor's facial features were very good.

Luo Ding smiled, stood up lightheartedly and walked to the front of the stage. He looked straight at Zheng Kezhen, with a smile on his face and his eyes like a pool of water.

Zheng Kezhen subconsciously glanced at him, and his expression immediately turned serious. The originally slightly bowed back gradually straightened out. It was him!

In contrast with the photos that showed no special features, the actual person evidently has excellent facial features. Zheng Kezhen was stunned. Could the photos be distorted to this extent?

At the next moment, he immediately realized something was wrong. After Luo Ding came on stage, he didn't tell him which character and lines he wanted to try, but turned to the wall and faced them with his back.

Zheng Kezhen was shocked and about to ask. But, before he could speak, Deng Jian pressed down his shoulder.

“…… What?" Zheng Kezhen did not know why he was given this sort of look, but was surprised to discover that Deng Jian's face which was never serious during the whole audition, turned very earnest and joyous at this moment.

"Haven't you found out yet?" Deng Jian lowered his voice, as if he was afraid to disturb the tall young man who was not far away from them. He clenched his fist firmly. "He's in the play."

In the play?

Zheng Kezhen gasped, and his dazed eyes shifted back to the front of the stage and fall on Luo Ding's back. Deng Jian's words seemed to ignite the lead, and he felt his head exploded.

Is that it!

His whole body exuding arrogance and each of his movements were leisurely and comfortable, while the deep eyes that just lightly swept over seemed to be able to attract the audience.

One that went through all the hardships in the world alone and carefree, merely relying on the surge of hatred to survive. Where did his "refined, handsome and elegant, like an immortal" come from? Just because there was no existence worthy of his attachment except revenge in the world, he should have been like this, seemingly arrogant, but in fact, detached and emotionless.

Zheng Kezhen couldn't find any trace of vitality from Luo Ding's back. He was as quiet as a walking corpse.

He clenched his fists, sweat all over his palms.

If he could truly act to such quality.

Then his final work was unlikely to be a failure, as previously feared.

The next second, as if standing high in the clouds, the motionless figure finally slightly trembled and turned around.

Zheng Kezhen stared and fixed his attention at the guy on stage without blinking. When he accidentally met Luo Ding's empty yet boundless eyes, he only felt all the hairs on his neck stood up one by one.
